Growing and Care Recommendations

Bedding plants should be planted in the mid to late Spring. Many bedding plant varieties work well in full sun. Other varieties require partial sun. Be sure to read the planting directions included with the plants you purchase. If you aren’t sure, please ask one of our folks at the garden center, while you are there shopping. In the Denver area, most bedding plants can generally be install after there is no longer a threat of frost. If temperatures drop below freezing, that can often damage or kill newly installed plants. Make sure you cultivate the soil, before you install. Good soil conditions are very important to the growth and health of your plants. We suggest that you till the soil to a depth of at least three to four inches. Soft soil makes for healthy plants. You should also add a layer of planting or potting mix to you beds. Planting soil, along with some compost can really enhance plant growth.

Bedding plants are a great way to add color and life to your home or office, but they can be tricky to care for. Here are some tips for nurturing your bedding plants so that they will grow strong and healthy.

1. Watering: Bedding plants need about an inch of water per week, but it’s important to make sure the soil is completely dry before you water again. Watering too much can cause root rot, which will kill your plant quickly!

2. Fertilizing: Wait until your bedding plant has grown out at least one leaf before you fertilize it with a liquid fertilizer like Miracle Gro or Espoma Organic Plant Food. If you fertilize too early, the nutrients will wash away in the rain before they can be absorbed by the roots.

3. Sunlight: Bedding plants love sunlight, but not all suns are created equal! If you live in an area with lots of clouds or foggy days, try moving your bedding plant outside during warm weather so it gets as much light as possible during its growing season (generally April through October).
